“They seem to have disappeared. It was once a going outfit with a slick catalog and showroom filled with radio gear - enough to make ya salivate out loud. There's only one mail order gear place left: Universal Radio.”

“Yeah, tried all that. It's strange because Appalachian Outfitters was in the same area and they've closed too. Northern Virginia must be drying up.”

Those guys mostly solder for a livng, and once a year the old lady says, "no more toys till you get rid of the basement full you have now".

Acres of "normal" gear, and I've also seen esoteric items such as infinity transformers, seeker heads from Sidewinders, and 3rd generation Soviet night vision.

Why pay retail, when you can get bench tested used gear for ten cents or less on the dollar?”

“Interesting posts treebeard and jeffers. All I'm looking for is a Sangean ATS606AP portable shortwave receiver. I can get it from Universal Radio in Ohio for $119 and change and $10 shipping, or $130 total. I did business years ago with EEB, which is a lot closer than Ohio, and had hoped to get back there one day and play in their showroom. But then again, the times I was there it was filled with geeks twisting knobs and I didn't get to play with the gear I wanted to play with.

Most retailers do not carry much in the way of SW radios anymore. What I usually find is Grundig's crappier radios, aimed at unknowledgeable people who just want to dabble in SW and not be bothered with too many technical details or controls.

The Sangean ATS606AP is small and light enough for backpacking, is digital, and will replace a Sony analog receiver I have carried for years.

Universal Radio is still open, HRO and now some more upstarts. Some new dual band 144/440 China transceivers now as low as 49 dollars you can even find them on eBay.”

Dick Robinson was convicted of tax evasion and sent to Federal Prison. This was the nature of his 'conflict' and why the business closed.”

EEB went down due to the owner scamming the government due to equipment, batteries, and other things paid for but never delivered. Dick Robinson went to Federal Prison, and likely that was a major cause of the company shutting down.”
