What is there to do in Detroit?

“It's been a while since anyone posted to this thread.... I work in Detroit on a daily basis and there is actually a very active group of young professionals downtown who live and play in the city....

New things to do: the Detroit Institute of Arts just finished a massive renovation... Unfortunately, I didn't get to go to the opening weekend because I was getting ready to fly to San Francisco...

This Friday & Saturday, Thinkbubelz' band, "Ask Alice" is playing in a couple of cities west of Detroit:

Nov. 30 - Bugsy's in South Lyon, MI
Dec. 1 - Bobber Down in Whitmore Lake, MI (just North of Ann Arbor)

They are also gigging on Dec. 15th at a bowling alley in W. Bloomfield, MI

Stop by for some fun music and I hope to see some of you out there on the 1st & 15th! ;-)

“I lived in the Detroit area (Royal Oak) for 26 years. Loved it. I miss it dearly. The great thing about the area is that it is hard to get lost. The roads are laid out well and make sense.

There are TONS of things to do there.”

At a bowling alley! Interesting! I always thought "gigging" had to do with fishing or frogging.

“My inlaws are in Birmingham, Royal Oak, Southfield, and Ypsi. I avoid going there in the winter. Nothing like ten zillion people driving up and down Woodward at 70 mph on ice only 10 feet from each other!

“I miss the food diversity of the metro Detroit area. And the plain old ethnic diversity. All I get in mid-Michigan are black and white folks. Where are the Asian and the Indian folks?

But, I'll be down that way on Monday. Can't find a good hair stylist up here, so I'm headed back to my old one. I miss all the choices of a big city.

You are right. The diversity here is amazing-- Where else can you find Polish, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Thai, Greek, Mexican, Italian, Vietnamese, Filipino, Russian, Cuban, Tex/Mex, German, etc.... Food within a 20 mile radius of each other? (Not including places like NYC of course.)

We have a lot of diverse cultures in this great city/Metro area of ours. For a foodie like me, it's pretty awesome.

Plus, Detroit/Michigan consumes the most Pizza & potato chips per person than any other place in the nation.... Got to get that wintertime "layer" going... LOL....With the automotive industry, no wonder we are one of the fattest cities/states in the U.S.!”

“We get a bad rap around here. Great town and it's a hell of a lot better than it was just a few years ago.

Some of the suburban peeps are starting to bring money back down there; it's a good thing.

Ironic that Detroit is having a lot of refurbishment and investment pumped into it during a severe economic down turn in the area.

When things get back on track, great things are going to keep on coming.

The Super Bowl was really a shot in the arm around here.”
