new stove “I finally broke down and bought the Snow Peak giga stove with auto igniter. I used it the other night to my wife's chuckels and jeers and it seems to be a quite effective stove. I think it will be a great way to "loose weight", my other stove is the MSR dragonfly, on my non-snow trips. I love the dragonfly but it's just soooooo heavy. Any thoughts (related to the stoves) or input (again, related to the stoves)?” 8:56:57 AM 1/27/07 “There are a number of threads here (somewhere) about "how many stoves do you own" welcome to the club” 9:29:10 AM 1/27/07 “that's a great stove. the igniter supposedly only works about 30% of the time later in it's life, so i heard, so i got the one w/o the igniter. i carry a mini-bic lighter anyway so the itniter is needless weight anyway. it's a GREAT stove and you will get years of excellent service from it. if you get the snow peak mini-solo cookset then also get the windscreen for this stove. it's a little disk that fits over the stove and mates to the bottom of the cookset. it's outstanding.” 10:43:36 AM 1/27/07 “The click igniter on my MSR Superfly works about 25% of the time or worse. I carry a mini bic too.” 12:03:02 PM 1/27/07 “I actually liked my coleman single burner the best over the years. Used multi-fuel, very durable & adjustible flame. I like (& have used) the option of multiple liquid fuels over the years. Don't like cannister fuel unless my wife drags me car camping with her. Usually I just set up for her (& occasional take-down) & leave. Once in a while, I visit on my way to/from work. I think if I was going to cook all the time, I'd go back to the coleman. I do have an MSR which is ok, but it's either on or off with nothing in between. I (last 10-15 years)just don't cook with the exception of canoe trips. I eat on the move or (many)short breaks. Rarely light fires & do hike thru the night in colder weather.” 1:20:54 PM 1/27/07 “http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/news/article.asp?sp=&v;=8&uan;=5228 ” 4:56:59 PM 3/31/08 “Did ya get a 123 Y2? This is my favorite stove, bar none. I bought it for winter hikes but it's rarely that I even take the Pocket Rocket anymore.” 5:01:31 PM 3/31/08 “I never did - I've not got this one, but I remembered someone liking this design, must have been you. Just struck me as interesting. They've re-released it as the Svea.” 5:05:09 PM 3/31/08 “The lust of my camping life. I finally achieved it a few years ago when my dad died. Nothing like the sound of a svea 123 warming up in the morning. The MSR GTX comes close cause it has a similar burner assembly. I love the Svea. The brass is a bit heavy and the fuel resevior is small in comparison to other stoves. last edited: 3/31/08 5:14:17 PM” 5:14:10 PM 3/31/08 “So is it just the UK that they stopped selling it then .... is my new stove not a new stove?” 5:17:24 PM 3/31/08 “The Svea 123 has been out of production to my knowledge for years. But I have one from about 40 years ago that still burns like a blowtorch. I am glad to see them making a comeback. They are a work horse. last edited: 3/31/08 5:21:27 PM” 5:20:09 PM 3/31/08 “Do an eBay search of Svea 123. They have been around for years and years, at least since the 1960's.” 5:25:40 PM 3/31/08 “They're re-released it and I'm sure updated it!” 5:28:48 PM 3/31/08 ““They're re-released it and I'm sure updated it!” Y2 8:28:48 PM 3/31/08 Hopefully they didn't ruin it... :?)” 5:31:15 PM 3/31/08 “With a 123 you don't need coffee the rocket launch does just fine. still have mine, with the separate cleaning wire, not the intregal one.” 5:40:04 PM 3/31/08 “Silly y2.0.” 5:43:57 PM 3/31/08 “As far as I know they never even stopped making them. I bought mine a few years ago and it's just like they've always been. The key for the fuel adjustment may be a bit different than the old key style but the rest is the same. Campmor always has them.” 6:04:29 PM 3/31/08 “According to Wikipedia Svea was acquired by Optimus in 1970 about the time I began to notice the "Svea" no longer being available. I suspect I just did not look hard enuf. It was introduced in 1955 and had a production run of at least 50 years. The ad says it is re-released so I suspect that somewhere recently it was taken out of porduction. But it is such a wonderful piece of gear and also very aesthicly pleasing I am glad it is getting some new press.” 6:19:32 PM 3/31/08 “Those stoves are cool. I have the 8R Hunter version. It works the same way, but the guts of the stove are in a metal box. I bought it in 1979 and it works as well now as the day I brought it home.” 6:20:38 PM 3/31/08 “I have the Optimus 99 in the aluminum box. It's from 1973 or 75 and still runs great also.” 6:23:33 PM 3/31/08 “I'm not sure, but I think the 99 is a more powerful version of the 8R.” 6:25:59 PM 3/31/08 “I had 2 Optimus 8R's, one 99 and one 111C. They are all great stoves. I sold the 8r's but still have the other 2. Since I went to the pepsi-can stoves I rarely use them, but I still can't get rid of 'em. They are nearly indestructible and are good for simmering.” 6:36:59 PM 3/31/08 “The aluminum case 99 is about the same as the 8R except the lid on the 99 detaches to make a cookpot.” 7:29:16 PM 3/31/08 “Does anyone here use the mini-pump with their Optimus stoves? I have one I use with my 99, but it can be used on almost any Optimus as long as you change the fuel cap.” 7:34:06 PM 3/31/08 “I have an optimus mini-pump that my dad had with the svea 123 but I can not get it to work. I don't really see the need for it since priming gel should pressurize the fuel in cold weather just fine.” 7:37:07 PM 3/31/08 “I used to use an eye-dropper and just put a few drops of fuel in the cup. The pump works good for speeding up the whole process, but I agree it is not needed.” 7:45:05 PM 3/31/08 “i have my husbands svea123 from the early 70's and the sigg windscreen/cookset that goes with it. it's a little workhorse, we love the helicopter sound! AVOID the pump, use primer paste/gel!!! yeah, it's heavy, but it works everywhere.” 7:49:18 PM 3/31/08 “The only time I used the mini-pump was in very cold temps. I gave it to Nigal. I used a plastic eyedropper for many years.” 7:50:53 PM 3/31/08 “Did you have problems with the pump? It can be a little tricky. Too much and you have a fireball.” 7:52:49 PM 3/31/08 “Exactly. never did master it, either of us.” 7:55:31 PM 3/31/08 “Too much and you have a fireball.” mildbill 10:52:49 PM 3/31/08 With the Svea 123 it can be hard to tell the difference. hehehe If you leave the flame diffuser off it can really hit new heights of excitement. If you are real careful and have a steady hand you can pour a little bit of fuel down the burner assmebly so it pools in the cup. But... ummm... that can be living dangerously.” 7:58:11 PM 3/31/08 “I used to practice with mine at home. It took a while before I got used to it. The first time I tried it I almost lost my eyebrows.” 8:07:29 PM 3/31/08 “pretty stove. it is certainly functional but has a real neat look about it.” 9:09:13 PM 3/31/08 “Damn, this just might be the absolute worst piece of gear I've ever seen... It wouldn't work as a spoon or fork AND it's too short. LOL!” 2:55:23 AM 4/01/08 “classic example of over-engineering. had to figure out how to integrate three materials, color and stamp them, work a fork into the mix, and in the end wind up with something that was heavier and less functional that no doubt costs a lot more than... a plastic spoon.” 5:07:16 AM 4/01/08 “just what I was thinking Yogisan, my plastic spoon was a 'gift' from taco bell.....” 5:39:42 AM 4/01/08
