Wild Fire Near Big Pine, CA

“My son Nathan and I were heading up to Bishop for a backpacking trip out of South Lake. Just north of Independence a Highway Patrol Officer informed us they were closing the 395 and we would have to turn around and leave. Well Naviguesser, Mozark, Gnome, Dixon and Alexandra were also making their way up the 395. We contacted each other via cell phones and dropped back to Lone Pine so we could drive up to Horseshoe Meadow and camp there for the night.

The next morning the highway had re-opened so we drove up to South Lake to meet Phil, Phil's Son, Ladyhiker, Hodgeman, Trailflower, Snownymph and Trailtrekker who were all awaiting our arrival...so we could start the trip.

“Yeah, but I gotta take a break for a lil bit, just won an auction on eBay the other day for a 10-22mm EF-S f/3.5-4.5 Ultrawide Angle lens--the coolest part since it's EF-S it's a true 107 degree 10mm lens!! No crop factor. Know where some good deals are?”

Dub...the first is with a 17-40 L the rest were shot with the 70-200 L with a 1.4 extender(280mm)

SO how far were you from the flames?”

“Hey WW, I got another photography question for you...what kind of case do you carry your camera in while backpacking? I have one that fits around my hipbelt but it's kinda in the way so I lash it to the side of my pack but I'm looking for something better, any suggestions?”

“Awesome photos. Scary subject. We just got out of SE Yosemite. Lots of the creeks are dry already. Strange after so many wet years.”
