Mt. Katahdin “Hi! I am planning a road trip around New England starting Sept 23rd, 2011. I am a professional photographer and I'm starting my trip on Mt. Katahdin. I was wondering what route (up and down) everyone thinks is the most "photographic". They all seem awesome so I'm having a hard time choosing! THANKS!” 7:54:08 PM 8/30/11 “You can't go wrong. I think the classic views would involve the Knife Edge and Chimney Pond. Just be careful about placing your feet while taking shots along the Knife Edge. Here's a great source of info on Katahdin and the various trails: http://www.mainelyhiking.com/trails.html If you are up for some hiking, I suggest getting to the Bonds in New Hampshire's Pemigawasset wilderness, the Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge near Jefferson NH, and being sure to get to some of the great remote lakes and ponds in Maine. Some of the sunsets and sunrises viewed across Maine lakes are astounding. I still swoon over my memories of sunset and sunrise from a tent site near Antlers campsite in the 100 Mile Wilderness not too far south of Baxter State Park.” 8:18:50 PM 8/30/11 moose “8 of 10 moose pictures from maine are taken at Sandy stream pond. Enter the park at the Togue Pond gate. 8 miles on dirt to Roaring brook. .3 miles (short) walk to Sandy Stream pond. Sept 23rd is LATE in the Baxter season. Access to Baxter and the trails is very controlled. I have been there the first week in Oct and had trails closed due to snow. Certainly Chimney Pond, Cathedral Trail, Knife's edge are spectacular.” 10:55:02 AM 8/31/11 “do me a favor. when you publish your pictures, label them "Katahdin", not "Mt. Katahdin". "Katahdin" means "Greatest Mountain" in the Abenaki language. It sounds silly to call it "Mount Greatest Mountain".” 1:31:23 PM 8/31/11 “c.b. is correct. Katadhin refers to the giant land mass that comes up out of the flat marshy maine plain . . .the two peaks of Katadhin are Pamola and Baxter Peak . ..each qualifies as a separate mountain given the distance and altitude change between them (connected by the knifes edge, a 1.1 mile spine of crumbling granite).” 1:36:54 PM 8/31/11 “10 peaks on Katahdin, Pamola, Chimney, South, Baxter, Hamlin, and 4 on the North Peaks Trail.” 10:56:47 AM 9/02/11 Katahdin Motorcycle/backpacking trip “I am planning a motorcycle/backpack trip to Katahdin. I do understand no cycles in baxter. I am trying to find out if a motorcycle is good up to Togue Pond Gate and if this is a common trailhead to leave vehicles. Or should I check for a place to park in Millinocket? Three of us on cycles, for up to 4 nights. Thanks for any insight.” 10:00:03 AM 1/03/13
