-20 or better sleeping bag?View MessagesSilly Cousins to the South “You guys gotta meet a Canuck (me), eh? Practical shyte that works (white gas, et c. Come to FYAO. Bienvenue tous, eh?” 12:26:23 PM 12/01/11 “bitpusher, that reminds me. I've read of people using vapor barriers inside bags and under socks and gloves in extreme cold to exclude evaporative cooling as a factor. Plastic bags, silnylon bags, etc. Mylar emergency blankets take care of evaporative and radiative cooling due to their aluminum coating - but I think I would rather freeze to death than listen to one all night. The one posted above looks similar to this one: http://www.cabelas.com/outdoor-safety-survival-sportsmans-space-blankets.shtml” 6:34:18 PM 12/01/11 “Oh, sandyann, no smarmy here! Chix that go to the Himalayas?...... One word........... AWESOME!” 8:56:54 PM 12/01/11 “Yeah I thought it was the Himalaya comment. =o)” 9:08:34 PM 12/01/11 “Yah I always carry one of the cheap mylar emergency blankets, even on a dayhike. They weigh nothing, and could save your life. The last couple of "I shouldn't be alive" episodes I've watched both had to do with people getting injured in the desert near Moab, Utah, and getting really cold at night. Although in both cases, the people involved lived (duh), they would have been a lot better off if they'd had a space blanket.” 6:50:03 AM 12/02/11 “Yep, good advice, I always carry one in my first aid kit. I wouldn't want to sleep with the thing tho...or try to get it back in my kit after use.” 7:45:42 AM 12/02/11 “I carry one, good to hear you do too. I'm usually the guy carrying a full daypack on day hikes with full emergency kit, extra snacks and extra water. Silnylon tarp, too. I'm the one getting the odd "are you kidding me its just a 3 hour hike!" looks from everyone else. I think the evaporative cooling advice is in official Army training, not sure.” 11:26:49 AM 12/02/11 “Backpacker magazine is hosing up my eBay sleeping bag strategy.. " Sleeping: I have a personal philosophy here; there’s no such thing as too warm when it comes to a winter sleeping bag. Nights are long, temperatures are low, and sleeping cold means you don’t rest well. Nothing is better than a -20F or warmer down bag, but they’re super pricey. (Note: There were three -40F Cadillac quality Marmot CWM sleeping bags - like the one which kept me toasty at Denali's high camp - for sale on eBay for $300-$425, which is half price or less.)" http://www.backpacker.com/survival_camping_winter_winter_camping_beginners_guide/blogs/the_pulse/1608 Thanks for nothing fellas” 12:58:43 PM 12/02/11 “Here ya go pedx: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=320805522285&index;=5&nav;=SEARCH&nid;=07285065041 Brand new 6' puma for $550. Buy it now price. You could always make an offer..” 6:10:44 PM 12/03/11 “This gets more tempting. I'd expect a bigger discount on ebay (it's pretty easy to get 20% off with a little patience from a brick and mortar store) - but I put in a bid to show I'm interested. Figure if he doesn't get what he wants, he'll check back with bidders.” 8:56:30 AM 12/04/11 “That guy sells new stuff, he probably won't get back to you...if you offer him $500, he might take it.” 11:42:50 AM 12/04/11 “I'll see how long my bid rides - it says I'm under his reserve though. I'm not sure I'd pay 500 right now - that's 20% off list, not a great deal. I might up my bid, though I don't know what his reserve is. He's got a good rep, but I'm still in the looking to snag a really good deal mode. Thanks camper!” 6:57:59 PM 12/04/11 “I stay in that mode and I love shopping for gear! Sleeping bags in that temp rating and price range are often bought and not used that much, imo.. I certainly wouldn't rule out getting a used one.” 7:11:20 PM 12/04/11 “You're right about them not getting much use. I don't know how much I'll use it. -20 is required for Appalachian Mountain Club winter backpacks in the area - I'd definitely consider used or consignment - especially if I got a chance to look at or I had good reason to trust the seller. I'll up my bid further as the deadline approaches, but I figure the reserve is probably more than I want to pay,” 11:19:27 AM 12/05/11 “Here's a used one in your size 1camper - he listed as regular and then corrected himself: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Western-Mountaineering-Puma-DL-Down-Sleeping-Bag-25-F-Regular-size-6-/220908159566?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash;=item336f27024e#ht_570wt_1397” 3:32:51 PM 12/06/11 “Thanks pedx, but we're shopping for you.. besides I already bought one bag since this thread started for my little girl. (I still put it on my watch list)” 3:43:57 PM 12/06/11 “Ok pedxing, I bought this bag and I was wondering yall's opinion of it: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=350510653869&index;=0&nav;=WON&nid;=62694255391&trxId;=0 The guy I bought from was older and knowledgeable. But, ...he rates the bag between 15*-20*. The bag has no rating tag, he says it weighs 4lbs. To me that says it's a 0*. I figure for $50 it was a steal. I'll use it as a loaner or if I determine it's a zero then I'll let my little girl take it for nights colder than 25*. She has a 15* I bought on ebay since this thread, this is number two. Lol. Don't think I better buy any more..” 5:33:59 PM 12/11/11 “Man, I sure wish I could swing that Puma, its at $315 and comes up in the wee hours of the morning, will probably stay below $400, what a deal! Used on one trip..” 7:51:58 PM 12/11/11 “Looks like a great deal! If its 4 pounds and gets you to 20 below, then it is a totally awesome deal. I'll be interested to hear what you say when you get your hands on it.” 11:15:14 AM 12/12/11 “That Puma sold for less than $350.00, I'm kicking myself....I can't buy myself presents...” 11:26:02 AM 12/12/11 “Check out Wiggy's. Two bags for 3 temp ratings. $390 for -20, overbag and "ultra light". I have one of his bags and it is great but not light. http://wiggys.com/category.cfm?category=6” 2:02:25 PM 12/12/11 “Here is a shot of the two bags I got on ebay since the start of this thread.. The solid color one I got for less than $50, to me it appears to be a zero. The other is a Marmot 15*. I took them out last week, let one of my kids friends use the blue one and had no complaints..it wasn't that cold tho, just under 30*. The bag has no temp rating. It was made in CO and is all down with a slightly heavier fabric than the Marmot, it weighs a bit more, tho I haven't weighed it myself. The head and foot sections have noticeably more down/loft than the middle. If you look closely you can see the baffles in the middle are very narrow. The quality, stitching, and ability to hold down are better than the Marmot or my Big Agnes bags. I haven't seen it leak any down at all. Great bag, packs down pretty small and appears to have a better dwr coating on it than my others. I'm thrilled with it! Not being a known "name brand" there were only two bids.” 1:56:02 PM 1/03/12 “Good deals!” 6:52:50 PM 1/04/12 “Go on the backpacker mag forum and ask if it's a Wiggy” 8:49:17 PM 1/04/12 “BTW, I tried a mylar/space bag liner years ago and the silvery coating rubbed off after a few nights. The liner tore not long after. The heavier space blanket is just too heavy. I bought a VBL from MEC (www.mec.ca), but it was too tight for little me - I couldn't get my arms into it. I traded it to Sacco at a FYAO and he sent me some sylnylon and I had a local seamstress sew me a bag (yeah, I have a sewing machine, but for the price ...). Works like a charm.” 11:57:52 AM 1/05/12 “Another one coming up tonight pedx, http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=200714208395&cmd;=VIDESC&index;=0&nav;=WATCHING&nid;=46281850497 Looks nice, at $315 only four bids but ya never know.” 5:52:48 PM 2/21/12 “Good looking bag.” 6:11:21 PM 2/21/12 “About 1/2 pound heavier than the current Puma, but, as Fridge says, a good looking bag.” 7:29:26 PM 2/21/12 “Half pound! I thought they were closer than that. Oh, we want Puma for sure then.. last edited: 2/22/12 4:06:57 AM” 4:03:30 AM 2/22/12 “The listing says the Big Horn is 3lb 14oz, but also says it is "about 4 lbs" the Western Mountaineering web site says the 6' Puma is 3 lb 7oz. On the other hand, it looks like the Big Horn was actually a -30 degree bag.” 5:33:04 AM 2/22/12 “Another Big Horn is up, bids start at $350. http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=260992118891&index;=10&nav;=SEARCH&nid;=14253322497” 7:23:09 PM 3/29/12 “No bites at $350, he relisted it at $325.. http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=260996464891&index;=13&nav;=SEARCH&nid;=46780028838” 6:29:44 PM 4/05/12 “http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=61385 A great deal but I can't swing it right now..” 6:44:44 PM 10/22/12 “Western Mountaineering 2nds http://www.bentgate.com/wemocoblsa.html” 4:34:16 PM 1/09/13 “Western Mountaineering 2nds! http://www.bentgate.com/wemocoblsa.html” 4:35:31 PM 1/09/13 “play it again sam” 5:27:50 PM 1/09/13 “Hey they're 2nds!” 6:35:44 PM 1/09/13 “I'll second that!” 3:26:59 AM 1/10/13 Third time's the charm “Hey guys, try not to be redundant and repeat yourselves. Don't say the same thing twice. Useful link - though I wish they'd discount the seconds more than 20%. Amazon has the full quality for 15%.” 7:21:46 AM 1/10/13 “It's pricey but I have to add this baby. http://www.montbell.us/products/disp.php?cat_id=796&p;_id=2321136” 6:52:48 AM 2/09/13 “USGI Extreme Cold Military Sleeping Bag (NEW) - Mummy - Army Green - Surplus US $89.99 Description This is a genuine United States Government Issue (U.S.G.I.)
