Did a backpack this past weekend through the beautiful southern Taconics. Despite their modest height, these mountains have views that easily rival higher peaks with their open, grassy balds on some summits.

We followed sections of the AT, South Taconic Trail, and side trails.

We camped on top of Brace Mountain, with amazing views in almost all directions. However, the summit got socked in, and later a powerful thunderstorm hit with torrential rains and high winds. My tent was put to the test, but it held up, and I stayed dry. The rain was so heavy it sounded as if water was boiling against my tent. My first time camping on a summit, much less in a thunderstorm.

The views the next morning were simply excellent as mist draped distant hills, clouds capped the Catskills, and fog hung in the deep valleys. The sunrise was amazing.

Afterwards, we did a quick visit to beautiful Bash Bish Falls.

Check this area out.
