There is also a camp ground, for those who want to tough it out :-)

Gremlin, since we all have winter sleeping bags is it really neccessary to keep the stove running over night? We sleep upstairs, where it will be warmer and with all those bodies lying around the bedroom may be plenty of warm?

Let me get this straight.., the concern is that nighttime temps might be too warm at FYAO??

Just asking.
For those who feel concerned that their @ss may burn we can always get them a shovel of crushed ice to sleep on.

I don't know what the huts are like over there. They may be quite different from what we have here. That's why I am so excited about joining this trip.

I am not backpacking to a lean-to this year because I have a health problem that makes me reluctant to carry a pack away from my car. - Gremlin

I missed this sentence in the details.. so now I get it.

Lol @ 1camper...
... nothing serious (I hope), I see my neurologist 15 January.

You will also need fluffy slippers, down or poly, Acorns at the least. Outdoor footware is not permitted past the entrance carpet and boot rack. Downstairs the floor is never warm.

Euro, I'll sleep by the stove. The house is big and the stove helps, besides, it's an airtight and easier to keep going.

The hut is very spartan compared to those in Europe, or other ACC huts in the Rockies. Facilities are basic and the house is otherwise empty.

The big log house on the right is just an indication that the entrance to the car park is close. The entrance is on the left. When I go down next time I'll bring my drill and screw a couple of reflectors to the sign for those arriving in the dark.

Also, if you are going to bag a peak, you must have snowshoes. This is the law and the ranger will sen you down or arrest you. I've seen them send away and threaten to arrest. It's easy to run into a ranger and not worth the risk to flout the law.

Karin, I will have everything you need..

I decided to drive, so if anyone needs a lift, give a shout out. I am leaving from Cincinnati. I will be leaving that Thursday morning.

I cannot find any mention of pets in the regs. I know Fridge travels with Trail the Wonder Dog. If Sacco, Ped and Fridge all bring a dog, management is up to you guys. I have no objections.

Karin FB messaged me asking if alcohol is permitted. This is FYAO, eh? Alcohol is Mandatory! could you imagine a FYAO without beer, wine and/or malt/Irish whisky?

Is alcohol prohibited in ADK or AMC huts?

Also, Euro suggested we make a spaghetti sauce and have a communal meal. What do you guys think? Any dietary considerations?

True. It was an Epic trip. The most treacherous road to the trailhead EVER. And the erie noises from the lake ice shifting. Not to mention Pharoah was my first peak EVER.

WHO was that culprite who threw waggon loads of wet wood into the fire and directed the acrid smoke into the lean-to at midnight? I suffered frightful halucinations from the smoke inhalation, beliefing you cowboy-gangsters were trying to smoke me out and gun me down the very moment I would jump from my sleeping bag and try to run from the shelter.

I would be surprised if you can't rent snowshoes in Lake Placid. There must be sport stores. It's a winter sport destination, isn't it?

Lake Placid is past Keene. you can rent snowshoes at the EMS store in downtown Placid. Wait! I just googled The Mountaineer, Keene Valley and they rent snowshoes. It's right on Highway 73 in Keene Valley which is just before Keene.
