Part of Newfound Gap Road will be closed indefinitely due to landslide.
A landslide along Newfound Gap Road near mile marker 22 has caused an extended closure of the road. Great Smoky Mountains National Park has closed Newfound Gap Road (U.S. 441) due to a landslide which undercut the road near mile marker 22 between Collins Creeks and Webb Overlook at 9:40 am. The slide is estimated to be a 200 foot section of road extending 1000 foot down slope, but the full extent of the damage is not yet known. The closure is expected to be in effect for an extended period of time.

Awe crap! I'm not far away from there, in Sylva, and it's been raining like a mofo here! If we had "proper" temps for the Ides of January, we'd surely have 4 feet of snow right now. My kids go to school in Bryson City, and they've had extensive flooding in the Deep Creek areas that's directly below the central Smokies on the NC side. That area is Swain County, and the county next door is Graham County, both school systems were closed yesterday due to the heavy flooding.

With all the snow you Yanks are getting, we've not yet had a single snow .... grrrr.....

Headed to Junaluska and Cataloochee Fri-Mon for a church youth group ski retreat. I hope the roads are clear. Cataloochee is supposed to get 6" of snow tonight.
