I'm considering buying the new one with the metal lid held on by screws (doubles as a frying pan).

I'd have been yelling & throwing stuff, threatening to kick that bear's ass. I don't want to lose my food.

I agree with Toejam. The person was an I D 10 T for allowing that to go on. Every one knows those bears are smart. Given enough time that can will open. However I do love my BV. Keeps my food safe long enough for me to chase off Yogi.

I don't know - I like the film. Maybe it was worth the risk to the person who filmed it.

Sandyann, I didn't think those bear cans were allowed in the Sierras. Has that changed?

I have the kind where you need a coin or a screwdriver to open. Adirondack bears figured those canisters a long time ago.

Ewker. They are now fully approved IF you have the new one with the red label on top. It has two release buttons. Hard enough for a human. You can return the old unapproved laid and BV will send you a replacement. They used to do it for free. I don't know anymore.

The biggest problem is the lazy human who doesn't close it all the way because it is hard to open. Then the bear just has to play with it a little. That bear probably would have gotten an old one open after five minutes.

sandyann,

thanks for the answer. I thought the only approved one was the Bearikade. Glad to see others companies getting approved now

Am I the only one who doesn't use a bear vault in bear country? I've always gone with the counterbalance method, and have never run into any trouble. Those bear vaults are huge, bulky and inconvenient (IMO). Admittedly, when camping above the treeline, there's not much of an opportunity to use counterbalance - but there also aren't many bears up that high either.

I only go in the Sierra without a bear can in full winter. Just not worth the risk. Having said that we do hang any items that won't fit. Thing like toiletries and snacks we don't care about.
