Beginner at backcountry camping
A couple of friends and I are planning to backcountry camp in the RRG. What are some things to expect while camping? Should we bring a tent, sleeping bag, or tarp? What should we do about food and animals? Where are the best places to make camp?

"Should we bring a . . .sleeping bag"?
.................

When would you ever not bring a sleeping bag?

Tent or tarp is entirely up to you and your tolerance to the environment.

Food: Technically, you're in bear country, but the odds of encountering one are about 1 in 100 million. Don't sweat it, especially if you are in a group.

There are a blue million places to camp in the Red. One of my favorites is Hansen's Point. It's on a ridge, so there is no nearby water. You will have to get water from a stream before you climb to the ridge.

Get maps from here: http://www.outragegis.com/store/cart.php
It will show you where all the trails and campsites are.

Please do not camp under or at any of the arches and if this is your first time backpacking, go with someone who has done it before. Every backcountry area has rules and regulations unique to that area, so please find out what they are and follow them.

Thanks. With packing, what should be taken and what should be left?

take: tent, lightweight backpacking stove, fuel for stove, food, map, compass, sleeping bag, enough clothes to keep warm, sleeping bag, something to filter or purify water, sleeping pad. Those are the basics. You really need to go with an experienced backpacker. The Red is no place to go solo if you've never backpacked before.

Thanks again. I'll most definitely bring someone who's been there before.

Definitely take a porter, one who can carry all your things. prepare, cook amd serve your meals and do all the clean-up. Also, you will need a swimming suit. a beach towel and sun tan oil. Some bug killer is an option.

Have fun.
