Preferred medicine here (over bait) is the 45-70. however, my friend Archie got a nice one this spring with a .243 go figure. He used it because his shoulder is still hurting from a snowmobile 'incident' last winter.

Forget bear spray. The new weapon of choice is a zucchini.

Montana woman fends off bear attack with zucchini

MATT VOLZ, Associated Press Writer

A Montana woman fended off a bear trying to muscle its way into her home Thursday by pelting the animal with a large piece of zucchini from her garden.

The woman suffered minor scratches and one of her dogs was wounded after tussling with the 200-pound bear.

The attack happened just after midnight when the woman let her three dogs into the backyard for their nighttime ritual before she headed to bed, Missoula County Sheriff's Lt. Rich Maricelli said. Authorities believe the black bear was just 25 yards away, eating apples from a tree.

Two of the dogs sensed the bear, began barking and ran away, Maricelli said. The third dog, a 12-year-old collie that wasn't very mobile, remained close to the woman as she stood in the doorway of the home near Frenchtown in western Montana.

Before she knew what was happening, the bear was on top of the dog and batting the collie back and forth, Maricelli said.

"She kicked the bear with her left leg as hard as she could, and she said she felt like she caught it pretty solidly under the chin," Maricelli said.

But as she kicked, the bruin swiped at her leg with its paw and ripped her jeans.

The bear then turned its full attention to the woman in the doorway. She retreated into the house and tried to close the door, but the bear stuck its head and part of a shoulder through the doorway.

The woman held onto the door with her right hand. With her left, she reached behind and grabbed a 14-inch zucchini that she had picked from her garden earlier and was sitting on the kitchen counter, Maricelli said.

She threw the vegetable. It bopped the bruin on the top of its head and the animal fled, Maricelli said.

The woman called for help from a relative staying with her. They found the collie outside, unable to move, and took it to a veterinarian.

The dog appeared to be fine on Thursday, but the vet was keeping it for observation, Maricelli said.

The woman did not need medical attention for the scratches on her leg, though she got a tetanus shot as a precaution, Maricelli said.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials set up a trap in an attempt to capture the bear, the agency said in a statement.

Besides the nearby fruit trees, there wasn't anything on the woman's property that would attract a bear into the backyard, like garbage or livestock feed, wildlife officials said.

Maricelli interviewed the woman, but said the sheriff's office was complying with her wish not to identify her.

"She was very, very shaken, and it kind of took the humor portion out of it for me," Maricelli said. "She said it had this horrific growl and was snarling.

"(But) she can see the humor in it, and she wanted the story put out so the local residents can take precautionary measures," he added.

Bear attack 2001
LONG TIME COMING
I pray everyone of you people who were talking smack about "MY BROTHER" don't ever find yourself in this or any other horrifying situation. Kenny is blessed to be alive. We are NOT tree huggers or Green Peace. We are all American, NRA card carrying pro-gun, life loving people who praise God for HIS beautiful land and the opportunities afforded to us by God's awesome Mercy and Grace. We are well versed in weapons and bows etc. One thing we do not do is talk about people. That makes you a gossip!! Shame on you. Get the FACTS before you start throwin' your incorrect assumptions around. Re-read the article and ask a grown-up for help on the big words you don't understand, like face ripped off, skull being chewed on. Think about what this did to him and our family. We still get that aweful feeling wondering if he was going to live or die! Like I said, I pray none of you find yourselves in this or in any horrifiying situation. For the record, We did lose our oldest brother in a horrific plane crash in 1985. These are things one never gets over. I thank God I still have one brother living. [b][u]

So I am guessing she didn't have her facts straight before she posted.

Don't take me wrong, I have nothing harsh to say about the ordeal her brother went through. If it was the event in the very early posts (2001) it sounds like he was lucky to be alive and did everything he could to survive. Ice Tea made an off hand comment about being liberal, but other than that, I didn't see anyone talking "smack" about him.

I wonder if Bears sit around discussing their encounters with us BiPeds? Somehow I cannot picture one sitting on a log having just wiped his ass with a popular TP brand saying Sorry to hear about old Bruin. He only went for a stroll gathering berries and some ass wipe human peppered him and blew his brains all over the forest floor.
It is only a case of remorse and sympathy because we are human with emotions that warrant attention from others.

Victim of bear attack rebuilds faceBy KATHY DYE THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
Kenneth Horton lay in a Seattle hospital bed last month trying to muster the courage to look in a mirror.
Days earlier a brown bear with a cub had mauled him on Admiralty Island. The sow swatted his face, crushed his left cheekbone and ripped out the muscles and nerves. When the bear was done, Horton was holding half his face in his hand.

Horton was rescued and medevaced to a Seattle hospital, where surgeons reattached the skin but postponed surgery on the crushed bone and lost tissue. Horton knew his cheek was caved in and that he could not move the left side. It took several days to find the courage to face a mirror.

"Finally I got brave enough to look. I seen a pretty torn-up me," said Horton, 52, from his home in the Mendenhall Valley.

"It was kind of like my face looks now - a half a smile and a half a nothing. I was pretty disgusted with the way I looked."

He hopes to get his smile back this week.

Horton flew to Seattle today for reconstructive surgery on Friday. He said doctors plan to take bone from his head and screw it to his face to reconstruct his cheekbone. Then surgeons will take muscles and nerves from his leg or arm to rebuild the lost tissue, said Horton, who hopes to return to Juneau early next week.

Doctors are "pretty optimistic" he eventually will regain most of the movement in his face but warned him to expect some scarring, Horton said.

"I'm not going to be entering no beauty contests," he said. But "I know I'll at least be able to smile, even though it might be kind of a Dick Cheney smile."

Horton, a seasonal worker for Juneau Ready Mix who lives on savings in winter, is concerned about his mounting medical bills. He has health insurance, but he's worried it will not cover the entire expense. He hopes people will help by making donations to an account at First Bank. A bank spokeswoman said people can make donations by specifying the Kenneth Horton account.

"Financially it's whacking me hard," he said.

However, Horton carries no grudge against the bear and considers the experience mostly positive. The attack attracted a lot of media attention on the West Coast, prompting other bear-mauling victims to contact him, said Horton, adding a Washington man who lost his eye to a bruin visited him at the hospital.

"I feel like I'm a member of an elite club now," said Horton, noting bear maulings in North America are rare. "But it was a pretty rough initiation."

When he left the hospital for Juneau, people at the Seattle airport recognized him from news stories and made him feel like a celebrity. When he went to the airport bar, patrons bought him beers and a ticket agent upgraded him to first class, Horton said.

"Everybody knew who I was," he said. "I was drawing a crowd."

Horton said the attack made him a better person.

"I don't recommend anyone going through it, but I feel lucky," he said. "It made me nicer to people and more sensitive. I just really appreciate people so much. I appreciate being alive."

Teens attacked in AK on NOLS course.

http://news.yahoo.com/alaska-bear-mauls-teens-learning-survival-skills-132506380.html

Things I found interesting:

1. No bear spray on NOLS courses in grizz territory?

2. No one had a first aid kit?

3. Why did the kid run when he saw mama bear? Thought the bear hadn't seen him? Sounds like maybe some panic kicked in.

Other than that, seems like bad luck of the draw. Hope the kids recover OK.

This story has a lot more details than the local papers here. The only reason we got it local is one student is from Richmond. I don't understand why after 24 days of a survival course where they are learning to be leaders that one would run away especially downhill? I think you are right Roseymonset that there was a bit of panic going on. I am happy to read that all will survive.

After just three weeks, NOLS set them free to survive on their own and allowed them to hike out there without an instructor? Evidently, the students didn't possess the skills required to avoid the attack and mistakes were obviously made.

NOLS was arrogant to assume that their three weeks of training of these minors was going to be sufficient to stay safe. In my opinion, they were negligent.

Hope the kids recover soon.

More details. Seems like they did have bear spray, but didn't have time to deploy it. But the boy was attacked again, so why wasn't anyone there to fend of the bear with the spray?
