Oh, I'm sure someone will find a 3-yr-old Snickers wrapper. That is the common excuse, but NOTHING to date has linked this attack to "food in the tent" other than our resident sticks.

The story reads like, "Bear sees tent, bear destroys tent, discovers kids, drags kids out..........repeat"

sounds like a wacked out bear
FYI: "Al Ivany, principal biologist for the DEP’s Division of Fish and Wildlife, said the campsite, in the Gren Anderson section of the state forest, was clean and food was being stored in a locker 100 feet from the tents."

WNBC now reports that the bear didn't actually attack anyone. The reported injuries were old scrapes.

David is just sore at me because I refuse to bite on the tea party ideology. David you want to be a smartass with me about everything nowadays. We have been able to keep politics from scaring our outdoor discussions but it seems that has come to an end...too bad.

This was a young bear and could have been conditioned to hand outs or learned to dumpster dive. Reminds me of the one in Red River Gorge last year.

Just did a search and there are a bunch of news releases saying the bear did not injure the kids. All the newest reports say the injuries were old.

Translation for sticks: "Please ignore me berating folks in regards to the "food-in-tent" comments.

Come on man, do better.

So, let me get this right. Not only was there no food in the tent, but the bear didn't bite anyone.

I am not impressed with stick's research methods.

"I am not impressed with stick's research methods"......lol

But he told me...."Chin unlike you I search for updated news when someone posts something like this. So are you uninformed?"

But, I'm very used to being told by sticks that I don't know up from down.

Probably a yapper that the bear thought was a snicker with legs.

Depends on mast...if it has been a bad year in PA bears are looking for anything to put on fat for the winter.

What rosey sed...it is a fairly common thing where there are large bear populations. Especially for those that leave windows open. This bear was chasing a dog into the house so that would indicate to me the door was open.

This bear did not break into the home. It came in through an open door.

My point was that the dog lead the bear back to the master.

Here is how it might relate to backpacking:
The dog detects the bear long before the human could.
The dog runs off to investigate the bear.
The dog barks and nips at the bear.
The bear gets angry.
The bear goes after the dog.
The dog flees from the bear back to the master.
The angry bear is lead back to the human by the dog.

That is not protection.

If I take my dog backpacking, which I do, then the dog is on a leash at all times. If the dog smells the bear she'll bark and the bear will run away. The leash prevents the dog from running after the bear so no nipping of bear occurs and no angry bear only scared and far away.
