What is there to do in Detroit?View Messages“with air fare to Detroit at $16.00 R/T, is it worth it? your time to sell me Detroit. GO......” 7:22:10 AM 7/06/06 “Go to Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village (my favorite touristy thing in the area); it's amazing. Go to the DIA, the Science center, the Casinos. Mexican town, Greektown, Corktown. http://www.hfmgv.org/ last edited: 7/06/06 7:28:54 AM” 7:27:38 AM 7/06/06 “Detroit Tiger baseball Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village Detroit Zoo Detroit area TTers The stench drifting up from Ohio is nearly dissipated. Casino action What else are you interested in?” 7:31:20 AM 7/06/06 “not into gambling” 7:33:19 AM 7/06/06 “You can walk around town with a map saying...I wonder if Jimmy Hoffa is here?” 7:34:22 AM 7/06/06 “When are you thinking of coming? Since I drove all the way to West Virginia to see you and Treebeard last year, I might stick around to say hello.” 7:39:47 AM 7/06/06 “16 bucks? thats awesome!” 7:51:16 AM 7/06/06 “8-mile Road” 7:53:24 AM 7/06/06 “Not as immpresive as you may think Earthnsky. ;) Mapes, we could give you a tour of all the scarey neighborhoods in Detroit so when you watch "Animal Rescue Detroit" you'll know exactly where the rescuers are.” 7:55:51 AM 7/06/06 “Normally the first thing I do when getting to Detroit is to speed up and get out the other side as quickly as possible.” 8:02:46 AM 7/06/06 “the only thing I've ever seen in Detroit is the airport. :(” 8:15:21 AM 7/06/06 “You could always go visit my in-laws....” 8:17:43 AM 7/06/06 “Actually you saw Romulus, Earthnsky.” 8:19:17 AM 7/06/06 “Detroit has some really nice places to visit. Great music, great food, etc. I second Sass's recommendations for the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Also Greektown and Corktown, the DIA and the Science Center. A Tigers game is always a blast. Our Zoo, about 15 minutes north of Detroit, is awesome. Great Artic exhibit and a neat, new "Outback" exhibit where you walk with the kangaroos. With your interest in music, I recommend checking Royal Oak, Ferndale and Ann Arbor (and Detroit) for small music venues that might be featuring an artist you really like. There is plenty to do outside of Detroit, as well. Besides visiting with some of your favorite TTers (I live about 35-40 minutes from the city and the airport), there are tons of lakes and parks and other great stuff. And, of course, if you head out here before I move, you'll be very welcome to crash at my place.” 8:20:45 AM 7/06/06 “I think the fact that it's only $16 is telling you something. LMAO! Just kidding, I've only ever seen the airport, too...where the heck did you get that price, anyway? Hi ENS, I see you made it back alive! Was the drive good?” 8:20:47 AM 7/06/06 “Why in the heck is the airfare so cheap, anyway? What airlines?” 8:21:30 AM 7/06/06 “Really D.O.R.K., does this plane even have wings?” 8:44:35 AM 7/06/06 “And, of course, if you head out here before I move, you'll be very welcome to crash at my place. tarabull 10:20:45 AM 7/06/06 Well if Tara's moving, then I'm moving too.” 8:46:22 AM 7/06/06 “Noncom and Tbull sittin in a tree....” 8:48:54 AM 7/06/06 “I was there about 2 weeks ago for the week. I stayed in the financial district close to the convention center and it was absolutely DEAD at night. I hopped on the elevated train thingy and rode it to Greektown, which was mucho better. Businesses were open and people were walking the streets past 6 PM! Anyhoo, didn't see as much as I'd have liked, but The Detroit Institute of Arts was pretty cool. My favorite there was the two big wall murals by Diego Rivera. (Personally, I wouldn't pay to go there, but $16 is purty schweet!) last edited: 7/06/06 9:08:53 AM” 9:06:36 AM 7/06/06 “"the elevated train thingy " aka The People Mover. Tho, it barely moves any people, lol.” 11:56:06 AM 7/06/06 “If you're there in the right time of year, the Stroh's could be running.” 1:02:33 PM 7/06/06 “Urk, the Strohs family. I had to go to school with those little f---ers. Gary was always a piece of work. I hope Weatherly outgrew it.” 1:14:08 PM 7/06/06 “Did they smell like beer?” 1:17:26 PM 7/06/06 Detroit Wheels “” 1:45:24 PM 7/06/06 “A good sign that you are at a place you should not be is if the McDonalds across the street closes after dark. I was in New Orleans a couple of years ago visiting a family member in the hospital and saw this happen. All the local drug dealers and crackheads came out as soon as it got dark.” 1:55:46 PM 7/06/06 “The Stroh's brewery isn't in Detroit anymore. At least I don't think it is.” 2:12:43 PM 7/06/06 “Stroh's is just another old brand like National Bohemian in Baltimore or Piels in Philadelphia that was bought up by some company like Hielmen Brewing and is little more than generic "beer".” 2:44:09 PM 7/06/06 “Why in the heck is the airfare so cheap, anyway? What airlines? It's called "supply & demand". No one wants to go to Detroit unless they have to, so prices are cheap. No personal offense to any current residents, but it's pretty much indisputable that Detroit is the anal-opening of the country, as far as a major city goes. Why in the world would you want to go there? I'm confused.” 2:55:46 PM 7/06/06 “Don't hold anything back, wandie! ;-)” 3:08:00 PM 7/06/06 “I actually lived there for a couple years in my "early career" days when you would accept a transfer anywhere if it meant a promotion... yadda yadda yadda. I lived on 10 mile rd across the street from the zoo, I actually liked it! BUT... now that I've grown up a little & seen a lot more of the country, Detroit is certainly not somewhere I'd go for a frikkin' VACATION!” 3:21:53 PM 7/06/06 “But if mapleleaf flew into Detroit she could get in our car and be taken to Luddington, Nordhouse Dunes, on the sunny, white sand beach of Lake Michigan. =)” 3:31:57 PM 7/06/06 “I work for an airline, and I'm hear to tell you "I wouldn't get on anyones plane who was selling tickets for $16 from NYC to DTR." I wouldn't even feel safe sitting in it at the gate. There is such thing as supply and demand, but there is also this funny little thing called "operating cost" and tickets can't be sold too far below that, even when they are trying to drive out the competition. Don't get on that plane mapleleaf.” 3:40:18 PM 7/06/06 “They are re-allocating resorces from other areas, Meangreen. They are charging $16.00, that doesn't mean they're not filling up the gas tank before taking off, for Gosh sake.” 4:05:51 PM 7/06/06 “A valid point. I would still be leary. if you see duck tape, or bailing wire, you way want to reconsider though. This just screams decrepit ford tri-motor. Do the passengers have to get out and help push the aircraft away from the gate? LOL! I can see it now....” 4:44:53 PM 7/06/06 “I'm always kind of leary of air lines that buy other air line's planes that they are selling because they have too many hours on them. Hmmmmmm...” 6:05:58 PM 7/06/06 “it was spirit but they sold out from Ny to DT :( that sucks.” 7:07:06 PM 7/06/06 “detroit is a good place to get murdered.” 7:32:28 PM 7/06/06 “Hey, watch your mouth! Baltimore is just as good a place!” 8:03:43 PM 7/06/06 “My niece just visited. She lives in Detroit because she was transfered. She's interviewing and looking to get out by the end of the summer. :-| ?” 9:48:25 PM 7/06/06 “Detroit is scary. The suburbs aren't bad but Detroit is. I would never ever live there again. EVER. Spirit Air has a hub here. They probably just needed to get a plane back to Detroit. last edited: 7/07/06 6:32:30 AM” 6:30:50 AM 7/07/06 “Detroit is not be the greatest, safest city in the country but, like any city, it has history, music, food, art and plenty of ways to spend your day, safely. Anyway, flying to Detroit doesn't mean you have to spend your time in Detroit. The rest of Michigan is a very beautiful state, worthy of a visit. Some people fly to places, get in a car, and go. Sorry the deal ran out, mapes. There are many Michigan TTers who would have loved to see you and show you around.” 6:37:42 AM 7/07/06 “Oops. That above post by Noncon was actually made by tarabull....” 6:52:39 AM 7/07/06 “Was not.” 6:54:31 AM 7/07/06 “Oh my! What are two TTers doing posting from the same computer at 6:50 in the morning? :-)” 7:07:05 AM 7/07/06 “Actually it's 9:02 AM and I am at work. I was at work at 8:50 AM, 7:50 AM, and 6:50 AM today as well. So endeth the conspiracy, lol.” 7:09:32 AM 7/07/06 “Noncom is Tar's pet monkey. She let's him out of his cage to post on TT and hump the couch.” 7:09:49 AM 7/07/06 “So......it's a real comfy couch.” 7:10:35 AM 7/07/06 “Comfy or cumfy? [rimshot]” 7:13:04 AM 7/07/06 “ "All the local drug dealers and crackheads came out as soon as it got dark. So, did you get all you needed? $16 to Detroit! No one wants to go there, but everyone there wants to leave. Great, you'll probably have to purchase a "Detroit Lemon" for your return.” 9:07:24 AM 7/07/06
