I second Sass's recommendations for the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Also Greektown and Corktown, the DIA and the Science Center.

A Tigers game is always a blast.

Our Zoo, about 15 minutes north of Detroit, is awesome. Great Artic exhibit and a neat, new "Outback" exhibit where you walk with the kangaroos.

With your interest in music, I recommend checking Royal Oak, Ferndale and Ann Arbor (and Detroit) for small music venues that might be featuring an artist you really like.

There is plenty to do outside of Detroit, as well. Besides visiting with some of your favorite TTers (I live about 35-40 minutes from the city and the airport), there are tons of lakes and parks and other great stuff.

And, of course, if you head out here before I move, you'll be very welcome to crash at my place.”

“I was there about 2 weeks ago for the week. I stayed in the financial district close to the convention center and it was absolutely DEAD at night. I hopped on the elevated train thingy and rode it to Greektown, which was mucho better. Businesses were open and people were walking the streets past 6 PM! Anyhoo, didn't see as much as I'd have liked, but The Detroit Institute of Arts was pretty cool. My favorite there was the two big wall murals by Diego Rivera.

(Personally, I wouldn't pay to go there, but $16 is purty schweet!)

It's called "supply & demand". No one wants to go to Detroit unless they have to, so prices are cheap.

No personal offense to any current residents, but it's pretty much indisputable that Detroit is the anal-opening of the country, as far as a major city goes.

“I work for an airline, and I'm hear to tell you "I wouldn't get on anyones plane who was selling tickets for $16 from NYC to DTR." I wouldn't even feel safe sitting in it at the gate. There is such thing as supply and demand, but there is also this funny little thing called "operating cost" and tickets can't be sold too far below that, even when they are trying to drive out the competition.

Anyway, flying to Detroit doesn't mean you have to spend your time in Detroit. The rest of Michigan is a very beautiful state, worthy of a visit. Some people fly to places, get in a car, and go.
