“I'll take this thread back to dogs.

In regards to the booties, my dog does not carry booties [like $50 a set] but she does carry a roll of Vetrap [like $2 a roll] in her pack for foot injuries. I've never had to use it for the dog but it did come in handy when Coyote broke his finger on the trail.

FYI: Vetrap is a self adhesive bandage material used for horses and in the medical world. I'm guessing it is called something else when it's used for people.

My dog hikes all seasons with me but in the winter she packs a fleece coat that I made her [out of hunter orange fleece] which helps keeps her warm and safe. She sleeps in the tent if I'm alone, in the vestibule if I'm sharing, and in my bag in the winter if she's shivering. She's 40 lbs with a good coat but she still gets cold sometimes.

If you pack with your dog, be prepared to be responsible. My dog hikes off-leash...I agree with all the obedience comments above...and she remains on-leash in camp. She can't be trusted with food bags. I tether her at all times and warn people that if they feed her I won't be able to keep her out of their food bags. She's always been invited back on trips so our methods must be acceptable.

My dog packs all of her food and water, clean up bags, and first aid materials. I carry her fleece blanket and sleeping pad. [ 1/4 of a full length RidgeRest]”

“sipsey rarely sleeps at night in the backcountry. Even after 10 miles with a 3-5lb pack. She would run off if I didn't keep her on a coated aircraft cable lead. One great thing is she isn't vocal while out there.”
