Trail Dogs

Frankly, we didn't get a dog for the trail. We got one as a companion.

However, having said that, I think back over the years as to how many blue heelers, australian shepards, shepards and other "working" dogs I have seen on the trail. I also think about all the jack russels that I have seen wired up tighter than a crack whore.

I have been around hounds that were as docile as an old man on Xanax. Now, in time, I will find out more about this dog. But so far he is as gentle as a lamb around the house.”

If you;re going to bring a dog on the trail...choose well who you travel with and make sure that your dog is always well behaved. A well behaved dog can make the trip amazing while an inapproprately behaved dog can make it he11...for everyone.

I think that's very close to the truth. Genuinely bad dogs are very very rare and it is the owner's responsibility to keep them from becoming anyone else's problem. Most "dog training" is really owner training.”

I love my trail dog :)


That being said, I don't bring him on trips where people are uncomfortable with dogs. And I generally leash him around others who don't know him.”

It either has to be an Australian name or a cowgirl name, imo. Dixie is another. Her father was blue heeler and her mother red heeler and she has obvious red, white and blue markings.

This has been a democratic process so far. There are five of us and we picked the breed and puppy by consensus. Right now "Josey" is getting some traction. Although, I kinda thought an "A" named suited her. As far as place names, I liked "Yampa" but no one else did..”

“hmmm, I've experienced this phenomenon as well...i always win out because I'm the one that always spends the most time with, and does the training of said pooch. But Then w hen the dog was a gift for a specific family member, we let them make the final call. It really doesn't matter in 5 years if it's named vomit, you're gonna love and enjoy the dog no matter what.”

“Well, two of my kids are in college and won't be spending much time with the dog but it is also one of the last family decisions we will make while all the kids are kids. We were hoping it would go smoother... It'll be memorable if nothing else.”
