Adirondack Council calls for creation of Boreal Wi
http://www.empirestatenews.net/News/20050513-9.htm

The Adirondack Council yesterday called on the Adirondack Park Agency to declare 12,500 acres east of Carry Falls Reservoir in St. Lawrence County to be state-protected wilderness where motorized traffic would eventually be banned.

The northern slopes of the Adirondack Park, along north-flowing rivers, contain a rare, low-elevation evergreen forest that is otherwise found only in the sub-arctic spruce and fir forests of the Canadian and Siberian taiga, said Adirondack Council Executive Director Brian Houseal. It is home to a host of rare plant and animal species that have no other homes in New York State and whose survival will depend on how we manage these lands. Many of them are already carved up by logging roads and unofficial snowmobile trails. Unless this entire area is classified as a Wilderness or a Primitive Area, the damage to this habitat will only get worse.

The Adirondack Park Agency will hold public hearings later this month to gather public input on how the lands should be managed. The hearings will include dozens of new state land classifications, most of which the Adirondack Council supports.

Our greatest concern in this round of reclassifications is that local government officials in St. Lawrence County have expressed a desire to build a snowmobile bridge across the Carry Falls Reservoir into the heart of the proposed Boreal Wilderness Area, Houseal said. It appears that the county plans to use a federal grant inappropriately to complete this bridge project a grant which should only be used to improve recreation along existing highways, not this bridge to nowhere. The Park Agency should not encourage that effort by making motorized access possible across the southern portion of the Carry Falls Reservoir.

Houseal said the Council had written a letter to the Park Agency, reminding the agency that page 14 of the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan requires the commissioners to give special protection to sensitive boreal forests:

Flooding and Mudslide shut down I-87 in Warren County

American Red Cross opens shelter for flood victims

WNYT Staff
Several inches of rain fell Monday night causing a mudslide on Interstate 87. As of 1:00 am Tuesday, the Warren County Sheriff's Department reports that the highway is shut down from exit 23 to exit 25 in both directions. There are reports of as much as 3 to 5 feet of water on I-87. State Police and Warren County Sheriff's deputies have set up road blocks and detours.
The Warren County Sheriff's department reports the following towns have declared a state of emergency due to storm damage and road closures: Horicon, Bolton Landing, Chestertown and Warrensburg. The following roads are closed: Schroon River Road and East Schroon River Road in Warrensburg; New Vermont Road, North Bolton Road, Finkle Road, Federal Hill Road, Valley Woods Road and County Route 11 in Bolton Landing. County and town officials are asking everyone in those communities to stay off the roadways until the storm damage can be assessed.
The American Red Cross has opened a shelter to house people caught in flash flooding in Warren County. The shelter is operating out of the Bolton Firehouse on Route 9N in Bolton. Red Cross officials tell Newschannel 13 that more than 20 people are already being helped at the shelter and they expect many more to use the shelter.
Due to a major water main break, the town of Bolton has issued a boil water advisory for all those who use the municipal water system.
Stay with Newschannel 13 for the latest information on this story online and on the air beginning at 5:00 am with Early Today.

Last year I drove to Newcomb from the west side......Binghamton, Utica, Long Lake, etc.

Maybe if things are still bad I could go that way.....Long Lake, Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake, I-86 east to Rte 73.

It's a lot of two-laners, but I'll have all day Friday to get there.

Probably the best bet is to take I-87 up to Warrensburg (exit 23), follow route 9 to Chestertown, where you will take a right onto route 8, and then get back on I-87 at exit 25. Everything will be cleaned up by the time of the trip anyway, because I-87 is the main trucking route between Montreal and New York City.

11:30 AM News Update - I-87 Possibly Closed For Weeks Due To Mudslides

Video

I-87 POSSIBLY CLOSED FOR WEEKS DUE TO MUDSLIDES

It could be weeks before a section of the main highway link between Montreal and New York City is reopened to traffic. That's according to officials at the state Department of Transportation, which is assessing the damage a mudslide caused to Interstate 87 in the Adirondacks last night.

Severe thunderstorms brought heavy rains that washed out numerous roads west of Lake George in Warren County and caused the mudslide that shut down both sides of I-87 -- the Adirondack Northway -- between exits 23 and 25, about 65 miles north of Albany.

Police are detouring traffic onto nearby Route Nine, which for the most part is a two-lane road as it passes through several towns and villages in the eastern Adirondacks.

This morning a DOT official said it could take days or even weeks before the highway is reopened. The storm damage comes just before the summer season kicks in around the Lake George region, a popular upstate tourist destination. (Associated Press)

This could actually be good news for Warrensburg and Chestertown. The extra traffic through the towns could mean a little extra cash spent at local businesses.

The drive from Binghamton through Utica and on to Newcomb was not unpleasant, just a bit slower than I-88 to I-87 north.

sacco, would you recommend Route 12 north to Utica and then east on I-90 to Herkimer or I-88 east to Oneonta and then north on Route 28 to Herkimer?

I've got all day Friday to get to the trailhead.

hey actually, the reason i'm not going on this trip is b/c i have a dog show in bainbridge the whole weekend.

i'll be driving back and forth.

bainbridge is right off I-88, just north of binghamton, and bulldogs usually show first thing in the morning.

so if you want, we can meet up. depending on your timetable and what time the bulldogs go in the ring we should be able to workout something.

what say you?

If I had any sense I would hit the road at 6:00 AM since I'm driving close to 500 miles.

Binghamton is about 250+ from home so I could be there by Noon.

I could steal my kid's cell phone and take it on the road.

I like this "plan".

i won't know what time i'll have to be in the ring for sure until next week. as soon as they post the schedule i'll let you know. usually bulldogs go 8 or 9 in the a.m., which would mean i'd be done by 9 or 10.

depending on what time you come through and whatever you prefer, you can see the *tail* of the show or i can just meet you at the I-88 exit. then we can drive up to cooperstown for lunch and a couple beers if you wanna see the sights, and/or a BBQ lunch at the rancho- el sacco.

Hadlock Pond dam breaks, flooding area
Hadlock Pond dam breaks, flooding area

Staff reports

Updated: 7/3/2005 12:27:09 AM

FORT ANN -- The newly replaced dam on Hadlock Pond collapsed Saturday evening, spilling thousands of gallons of water throughout the area and flooding homes and roads.

No one was injured, but officials said they were forced to evacuate a couple of hundred homes. Another home was destroyed when it caught fire and officials were unable to get firetrucks to it. About 600 residents were without power Saturday night, according to Niagara Mohawk; restoration will start today.

Route 149 was closed between Route 9L and Route 4 in the village, causing potential headaches for tourists who want to use the heavily traveled road this long holiday weekend.

A flash flood warning was issued to warn people of the potential of more problems, especially in smaller streams like Halfway Brook that are fed by the pond.

Other local roads were closed, and bridges were washed out.

"It's crazy," said Steve Babson, an area man who was boating on the pond when the dam broke sometime between 6 and 6:30 p.m.

Babson said he was fishing when he heard a large cracking. Shortly after, he heard people shouting the dam had broken.

"'The what broke?'" Babson said he said when he heard. "'You've got to be kidding me.'"

Babson said he was barely able to get back to shore with his kayak as the water starting rushing toward the end of the pond.

Officials starting evacuating homeowners immediately.

"It's so sad," said Nancy Ziegler, who has lived on Hadlock Pond Road for three years.

Ziegler said her house was on high enough ground that she did not have to evacuate and her home was not affected. But many of her neighbors were not so lucky.

"My next-door neighbor's house is under water," she said through tears.

Friends from affected homes were bringing belongings to her house to try to save them, she said. Other neighbors were distraught because they could not reach the pigs they raised on their property.

Ziegler said she had never seen such a scene.

"I can sit in my living room and I can hear the water rushing down," she said. "There's just water everywhere. It's just unbelievable."

Ziegler said she was upset because the dam had just been replaced.

"They should have left it alone," she said.

John Aspland Jr., Fort Ann's attorney, said construction on the new dam started in September and opened in May.

The saga of the new dam, however, dates back to 1994, when the DEC's Dam Safety Commission determined it didn't meet its new standards and told the town to replace it.

"I don't think anybody could speculate on what happened," Aspland said. "It's just one of those things."

itch Beck, assistant chief of the West Fort Ann Fire Department, said officials are talking to DEC engineers and the architect of the dam to determine what to do next.

Those conversations would continue throughout the night Saturday and today, he said.
