I went as far as exit 30 on I87 this past weekend. No problems with any washouts. Hope that helps.

Thanks, Slacker.

I'll go as far as Fort Edward, probably.......Exit 19.......and over to Vermnont through White Hall(?).

I think Rt 149 through Fort Ann and White Hall is still washed out...there were signs on 87 saying that when we drove up Thursday. Not sure when it will be repaired.

I usually get off I-87 at Exit 19 and go east for Route 4.

Route 4 goes through While Hall and on to Rutland, Vermont.

You might want to get off at exit 17N, MarkO. You will follow Route 9 for a few miles and then take a right onto 197. This will take you to Route 4 in the middle of Fort Edward (Fort Eddered as the locals call it). The washout on 149 is at exit 20.

Sorry with the delay. Work has been cutting into my TT time today.

Many Thanks, Sahib !!!
I have used Exit 17 many times.

There was a gas station with good coffee at Exit 19......but that was 15 years ago.

The traffic at 19 sucks. I think they are trying to fit every chain store there is at that exit.

Another damn dam
Ive been hearing rumors that Marcy Dam breached last week during a period of heavy rains. The pictures posted in couchtaters trip report, First Trip to Adirondacks TR, confirms this. It is unclear whether the state will rebuilt the dam.

LOL. How was the trip to the Whites?

Terrible. It was torture having to get up every day to beautiful sunrises over the Presidentials, hike all day up and over the peaks, and then be forced to watch the sunrise in the evening. Noone should be subjected to that. ;) When I get back from the weekend I'll post a little report and my pics from the Whites. :)

Did you see that the boat was rated for a total of 50 passengers? According to the standards that would be at 150 lbs per person. I'm a skinny dude and I'm about 175!

Authorities continue tests on capsized boat
10/6/2005 8:41 AM
By: The Associated Press

The tour boat that capsized on Lake George Sunday may be back on the water today.

Twenty elderly tourists drowned and investigators are trying to recreate the conditions that caused the Ethan Allen to tip over.

A nearly identical boat -- the de Champlain -- became unstable during tests on Wednesday. The National Transportation Safety Board said those tests show the boat wasn't able to handle the weight of the 48 people on board.

More tests are planned as investigators try to determine what caused the Ethan Allen to capsize on Lake George.

The Detroit Free Press said Michigan drivers' license records for 42 of the passengers helped determine their average weight was 174 pounds. The Coast Guard standard that's been used since 1960 is for 140 pounds per person.

So the problem lies in the rating of the boats. At first it seemed like somebody wanted to try to lay blaim on not having enough crew. Even though that may have been an issue, it wasn't the problem.
Adventurist

Very true, I don't think a second crewmember would have changed the outcome of this tragedy.

You Might Be From Upstate New York if....
1. You consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 36 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by.
2. You're proud that your region makes the national news 96 nights each year because Saranac Lake is the coldest spot in the nation.
3. Your local Dairy Queen is closed from September through May.
4. You instinctively walk like a penguin for six months out of the year.
5. Someone in a store offers you assistance, and they don't work there.
6. Your dad's suntan stops at a line curving around the middle of his forehead.
7. You have worn shorts and a parka at the same time.
8. Your town has an equal number of bars and churches.
9. You have had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number.
10. "Vacation" means going South past Albany for the weekend.
11. You measure distance in hours.
12. You know several people who have hit a deer more than once.
13. You often switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day and back again.
14. You can drive 65 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard, without flinching.
15. You see people wearing camouflage at social events (including weddings).
16. You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.
17. You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend / wife knows how to use them.
18. You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.
19. Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow.
20. You know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter and road construction.
21. You can identify a southern or eastern accent.
22. Your idea of creative landscaping is a statue of a deer next to your blue spruce.
23. You were unaware that there is a legal drinking age.
24. Down South to you means Albany.
25. A brat is something you eat.
26. Your neighbor throws a party to celebrate his new pole shed.
27. You go out to fish fry every Friday.
28. Your 4th of July picnic was moved indoors due to frost.
29. You have more miles on your snow blower than your car.
30. You find 0 degrees "a little chilly."

Governor Announces $500,000 Grant for Historic Adirondack Site
Governor George E. Pataki announced a $500,000 grant to the Open Space Institute (OSI) to help restore historical elements of the Tahawus tract in the Town of Newcomb, Essex County. The property consists of approximately 10,000 acres in the heart of the High Peaks region of the Adirondack Mountains, including the headwaters of the Hudson River and the historic site of the abandoned Village of Adirondac and the former Tahawus Club.
