RE: The College Football thread
Florida established 1856. I believe Georgia was established in the 1750's. William and Mary has the oldest law (puke) school in the nation.

Those records seem to keep going around and around in your head Buddah. Must be old 78 speed with a lot of scratches, nut-boy.

Here's another statistic they should keep. How many players arrested on nationally ranked teams each year? Nebraska has already had four this season, and they have played one game! They have a lot of thugs on most of those teams.

RE: The College Football thread
Traditionally, Buddah, the Big Ten and the SEC have had the toughest conferences top to bottom. I love yanking Big Ten fans' chains. They seem to think that football exists only in their conference contrary to all logic.

The fact is, the SEC has the best head-to-head record of any of the conferences. The Big Ten is the second best.

Most of those Big Ten championships came when it was an opinion poll. Remember when BYU won the national championship? The majority of sports writers are from the north. It's always been a skewed poll.

I doubt that Florida will win-out, their schedule is too tough. Next year we play Miami, FSU, and a full SEC slate. What we need is a playoff system. The SEC started the conference championship playoff, the Big 12 followed suit. Meanwhile, the PAC 10 and Big Ten were still tied to the Rose Bowl which became the worst of the bowl games.

This year, although they only have four schools in the top twenty five (Colorado St. isn't in the Big 12 is it?), the Big 12 is looking tough. After the '95 season, I made a promise never to disparage Nebraska even if they have a boring schedule and beat up on patsies all year. This year will be different. Texas has the easiest route in the conference but they still need to play Oklahoma. I'm looking forward to that game!

RE: The College Football thread
I think the media overplays how hard Bama fans are on the coach. The fans are hard, I just think that it's not as bad as it's made out. Bill Curry came out last month and said his advice would be to win every game and beat Auburn twice in the same year. Heck, Curry never even beat Auburn once. Dubose stayed on the hotseat. It also turns out that Dubose was the worst coach we've had in 50 years.

Funny... I hate the Florida orange and blue, but the Auburn orange & blue is really quite beautiful!

BTW, there are damn few school colors that would look anything but ridiculous as trail attire. Well maybe the orange would keep a hunter from shooting you. Unless the hunter is a Bama fan... Good trail fashion etiquette would dictate school affiliations be left to ball caps only!

RE: The College Football thread
Arclite, did you say "graduating"?

The balance of power in major college men's basketball and football would undergo upheaval under a proposal linking postseason eligibility to graduation rates, a computer-assisted analysis by The Des Moines Register shows.

Forty-five of the 69 men's basketball teams from the NCAA's top six conferences failed to graduate at least half their players from 1993-2000 and would have been ineligible for postseason play under a proposal made by the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics.

The Register's analysis showed that three of the last five Associated Press football champs ? Florida, Oklahoma and Tennessee ? reported median graduation rates of less than 50% for the period.

He says the average graduation rate among athletes ? not including men's basketball and football ? is about 64%. The NCAA has acknowledged, however, that the national graduation rate is 34% for Division I basketball players and 48% for football players.

The Register's analysis showed that the conferences with the highest number of teams below the 50% minimum were the Big 12 and SEC. In each of those conferences, seven of the 12 members had median graduation rates less than 50%.

moooooooohahahaha!

RE: The College Football thread
Sorry to disappoint, kleetn dear, but your stats seem to be as skewed as your political views. Florida graduates 76% of its football players. That's one of the highest rates. Some statistical polls count against graduation rate if a player leaves early to play in the pros. Florida has so many good athletes, that many do leave early to play professional ball. You quote a misleading statistic, but I shouldn't expect any less from you. You mislead me years ago. Oh the shame!

Have somebody read this to ya.... Bowl game winning percentages of Division I-A conferences updated after the 2000 season.

Pacific-10 .525
Atlantic Coast .515
Southeastern .513
Big Ten .511
Mid-American .500
Big 12 .482
Conference USA .478
Big East .474
Western Athletic .462
Big West .441
Mountain West .428
kleetn
5:53:49 PM

RE: The College Football thread
Those percentages do tell one side of the story. Here is another side: total bowl appearances.

Pac-10 176
ACC 161
SEC 300
Big 11 179
Mid America 33
Big 12 250

PAC-10 has won a slightly higher % of games, but the SEC and Big 12 have consistantly been the ones to be good enough to go to bowl games. This was particularly true for the days when the weren't as many bowl games. In those days it was truly and honor to go to a bowl game. Bama and UT are 1-2 in total bowl appearances.

RE: The College Football thread
Nice stats dayhiker. Kleetn, you and your vast left coast conspiracy will never convince true football fans that the PAC ten is as good as you seem to think.

Here we goooo!

Are ya ready for some football, Buddah? Lets look at silly statistics first. The Ivy League has won or shared 46 national championships dating back to 1869. Gee, I guess that makes the Ivy League the best league, huh? Now lets get to the meat, head-to-head match-ups in the bowls. You may want to copy these stats, Buddah, to show to your big ten buddies.

BOWL GAMES-

Sugar Bowl- 1975 (Bama 13, Penn St. 6); 1978 (Bama 35, Ohio St. 6); 1979 (Bama 14, Penn St. 7); 1983 (Penn St. 27, Georgia 23); 1984 (Auburn 9, Michigan 7)

Orange Bowl- 1938 (Auburn 6, Michigan St. 0); 1974 (Penn St. 16, LSU 9)

Fiesta Bowl- 1992 (Penn St. 42, Tennessee 17)

Gator Bowl- 1962 (Florida 17, Penn St. 7); 1983 (Florida 14, Iowa 6); 1989 (Georgia 34, Michigan St. 27); 1991 (Michigan 35, Mississippi 3)

Citrus Bowl- 1993 (Georgia 21, Ohio St. 14); 1994 (Penn St. 31, Tennessee 13); 1995 (Alabama 24, Ohio St. 17), 1996 (Tennessee 20, Ohio St. 14); 1997 ( Tennessee 48, Northwestern 28); 1998 (Florida 21, Penn St. 6); 1999 (Michigan 45, Arkansas 31), 2000 (Michigan St. 37, Florida 34)

Peach Bowl- 1982 (Iowa 28, Tennessee 22); 1988 (Tennessee 27, Indiana 22); 1990 (Auburn 27, Indiana 23)

Outback Bowl- 1988 (Michigan 28, Bama24); 1990 (Auburn 31, Ohio St. 14); 1996 (Penn St. 43, Auburn 14); 1997 (Bama 17, Michigan 14), 1998 (Georgia 33, Wisconson 6); 1999 (Penn St. 26, Kentucky 14); 2000 (Georgia 28, Purdue 25)

Liberty Bowl- 1959 (Penn St. 7, Bama 0), 1982 (Bama 21, Illinois 15); 1986 (Tennessee 21, Minnesota 14); 1988 (Indiana 34, South Carolina 10)

Independence Bowl- 1995 (LSU 45, Michigan St. 26)

SEC- 22 wins
big ten- 13 wins

Thank God, Penn State joined the league and was able to pad the stats of what was truly a pathetic conference.

Lets look at some more stats for the big ten folks who are having trouble with this concept.

Top 20 I-A college teams with most bowl appearances:
SEC- Bama, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, Arkansas, Mississippi, Florida, Auburn
big ten- Penn St., Ohio St., Michigan

Top 20 I-A college teams with most all-time victories:
SEC- Bama, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, Auburn
big ten- Michigan, Penn St., Ohio St.

Top 25 I-A college teams with highest all-time winning percentage:
SEC- Bama, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, Florida
big ten- Michigan, Ohio St., Penn St.

big ten = TOP HEAVY LOOOOOOOOOSERS!

SEC = TOUGHEST LEAGUE IN THE NATION TOP TO BOTTOM
