RE: The College Football thread
Here's some great statistics for you.
The two teams in the nation who have played each other the most times?
Minnesota vs Wisconsin!
(Second is Kansas vs Missouri)

Longest continual rivalry?
Kansas vs Oklahoma.
(Would be Kansas vs Missouri but it was cancelled one year due to influenza epidemic).

Team that has had the most players since its beginning?
USC! (At least they think they played for the Trojans).

The racord, Buddah? You have supplied absolutely NO stats. I was kind to you boys too. Last year Ohio St. got beat by South Carolina in a bowl. Bwaaaahahahaha...

LOOOOOOSER!

Nope, Dunadan:
Minnesota-Wisonson 109 games
Richmond-William & Mary 109 games
Harvard-Yale 116 games
Princeton-Yale 122 games
Lehigh-Lafayette 135 games (longest continuous rivalry).

I've got the almanac right here. Just so I can read the stats to Buddah. Since he can't read for himself.

RE: The College Football thread
RL Here. Michigan '97.

When we were toting up the total bowl appearances, did anyone mention that the Big Ten didn't allow teams to go to bowls other than the Rose before the mid-70s? The conferences should go back to that.

BTW, THERE IS NO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. My team supposedly won a week after I graduated. But after waiting the night after the game for the votes to come in, I realized that this is a sham.

Michigan was perfect that year, that's all that matters. BTW, they were perfect in the early 70s, too, and didn't go to a bowl.

Michigan claims like 11 championships in football, but it depends on which of a dozen polls you find credible. All are shams.

The current system is no better. It includes ratings systems that refuse to reveal their methodology. So the magic genie in Indiana reveals to us the mythical "National Championship Game". And all of us out here buy into it like little children.

Biggest stadium in the country? Michigan Stadium - 110,000+

Composer of Michigan fight song? John Philip Sousa. Take that.

Hail to the Victors. Still the champions of the West.

RE: The College Football thread
When Michigan started playing football, Michigan was in the West. The fight song refers to the Western Conference, of which they were a part. More recently, it fits with regular trips to Pasadena.

BTW, Buddha Bear, I've heard that they play college football in Ohio. Is this true?

RE: The College Football thread
It doesn't matter if you cheer 'em or fear 'em, everybody knows 'em. No matter how good a season this year, there will still be a record set. Only one win needed to surpass the Great Bear Bryant although the gap between Joe and Bobby is a worry at this point.

A few stats I happened upon(where they rank in history is in ():

Joe Paterno - Penn St. (1966?);
Years coached: 35
Record: 322-90-3
Win pct: .780 (17)
Career wins: 322 (2)
Bowl appearances: 30 (1)
Bowl record 20-9-1
Bowl win pct: .666

Bobby Bowden - Samford (1959-62), West Virginia (1970-75), Florida St. (1976?);

Years coached: 35
Record: 315-87-4
Win pct: .781 (15)
Career wins: 315 (4)
Bowl appearances: 24 (4)
Bowl record: 17-6-1
Bowl win pct: .708

Bear Bryant - Maryland (1945), Kentucky (1946-53), Texas A&M; (1954-57), Alabama (1958-82)

Years coached: 38
Record: 323-85-17
Win pct: .780 (16)
Career wins: 323(1)
Bowl appearances: 29 (2)
Bowl record: 15-12-2
Bowl win pct: .517

And an extra point for Paterno for doing it all at the same school.

Bias aside, I still give them all their props.

Bryant the legend. Alabama is still a great team. Even when Bama has a loosing season they're a great team. Some things just never change.

Hey bacpac-
Sooooooooeee pig pig pig! I watched as much as I could of that game last night. Them boys need to crank it up a notch if they want to survive the rest of the season.

It's all in good fun. I'm exited about this season. I believe the GATORS have too tough a schedule to go unbeaten. But if they did, then they'd earn that national championship.

I have absolutely no animosity towards any teams, save one. Only one team I hate, Jawja Bullfrogs. And I do mean hate! It's awful for me to think about, but I really despise that team and most of its no-class fans. I just have too many bad memories of them ruining our season. And their fans being the rudest anywhere, when we were in Athens. I can't wait until they get good again. So we can ruin their season! Geez, guess I've got some issues here.

RE: The College Football thread
I don't know if I would go so far as rebuilt 4 different programs. Maryland for a year? In 7 years at Kentucky they still were only so-so, Texas A&M; starts to hit rankings the year after he got there. That says a little of his predecessor. The same thing when he went to 'Bama although there is no doubt about what he did there. It was the same for Paterno, he made the rankings in his second year but has maintained overall since.

Here is the all time AP top 20 through 2000 season.

It appears that the longest running rivalry would be .

While I'm in the mood to give each there proper recognition, I must say Alabama as a school has the most bowl game appearances with 50. Penn State has but 36 as a school. As a school, Penn State has 739 wins, Alabama 737.

RE: The College Football thread
baume, you've made me question the records. I did some checking from KY forward. I'll agree that 1 year at Maryland doesn't say anything. At KY the coach before Bear was there 1 year and was 2-8. The guy before him was 24-28. Bear was 60-23. I'll call that a little better than so-so. At A&M; his records each year were 1-9,7-2-1,9-0-1, and 8-3. The guy after him was 4-6,3-7,1-6-3,4-5-1 which doesn't bode well for the next guy. At Bama the fella before him was 4-24. We won the '61 NC in his 3rd year. I'm not listing this info to take anything away from Paterno. I'm just illustrating that the circumstances are a little different. I hope Paterno keeps the record. Bowden counting his victories at Howard College is crap. My first Bama game was around '85 vs PSU in Tuscaloosa. We were ranked #2 and yall were #3. Yall beat our a$$ 23-3. I'm so glad that series continued on for a few years. As I said earlier, I'm looking forward to its renewal. You will find universal respect towards PSU from BAMA fans. I once read that the definition of a school with football tradition is that you didn't need to put the school name on the helmet. Oklahoma and Nebraska excepted.

Please do bongo. We can all reminisce about a happier time for ND fans.

Reformed lurker, I already posted the Michigan fight song.

I believe that you're going to have to wait at least another week for one of those victories, baume 66.

Interesting article in the paper today titled-

"Southerners love their football"

You see, down here, people in small towns all over go to junior varsity HS football on Thursday night and varsity on Friday night. The fan base is the whole town. The High School stadiums are large concrete structures.

The article goes on to say-

"Scholars have long recorded the South's obsession with the gridiron. In his article "Geography of Sports," Oklahoma State University professor John F. Rooney Jr. writes that "though football is a national game, the ability to play it well is inordinately concentrated in the South"...."When Southerners run out of outsiders to beat up on, they decimate one another, often knocking themselves out of contention for the national championship."

I don't know what you Northerners will be watching this year, but we in the SEC have a chance to send at least as many teams as the record nine we sent to bowls last year. Enjoy your peewee football up there.

Arclite,

Last night, I attended the varsity game of the school where I teach. I work in a small, rural town surrounded by lots of small rural towns. Football brings the people in towns together. But it also creates - at least where I'm at - friendly interaction between towns. This phenomena is not particular to the South.

I agree with the refomed. I have lived in the boonies for long periods, and small-town folks tend to love their football. I have not lived in the South, so I can't say that they are more or less fanatical. I might believe that Texans are more into their football, though.

Cornhuskers
Razorbacks
Ichabods
Crimson Tide
Demon Deacons
Sooners
Longhorns

Now you can fill in your picks.
