The perfect spoon

“So reading BS comment how many people don't eat just the bagged dehydrated meals. I just take Mountain House or Enertia Meals and some power bars. What do the rest of you do for food.”

I buy stuff in the grocery store that takes less than 10 min. to cook. I would rather cook and clean up than eat freeze-dried food.

I also dehydrate my own stuff.”

“My worst spoon was with a Canadian man, 1 week into a 2 month expedition. Shared a singlesleeping bag ontop of coiled ropes in about 6 inches of freezing water at 13,000+ after sharing a dinner of reconstituted refried beans.

It wasn't pleasant. But we lived.”

“I was near an outlet mall today that had three or four kitchen gadget stores. I went from one to the next looking for the now infamous telescoping spoon. Finally at the very last store, they had them. So I picked up two. I was wondering: If you cut the handle in half, it seems as if the weight would be halved and then it would still be a very long handled spoon. Any thoughts?”

“I could not find my lexan spoons this weekend. I had bought a pack of Wal-Mart spoons, because they were on sale for a dollar so I packed one of those. It is stamped metal, suprisingly light and a little oversized. It was perfect.”

“I wouldn't cut it in half---you're liable to pull the whole thing apart. (each internal section depends on the other when telescoping. You could probably cut one or two section off the end and achieve the results you want. I plan on trying that with my telescoping fork if you want to wait and see how it goes.”

“Sarbar - COOL SITE. Just checked it out...I am always on the market for neat home made camping food. I spent the weekend camping. We took NO cooler. Breakfast was the Mountain House eggs and grits with some summer sausage. Lunch was pb and j. Dinner was a bag of the Zuppa Toscana mix with dehydrated peppers, the remains of the summer sausage and some parmesian cheese...KILLER.”

That is my rule for myself. I just don't like freeze-dried stuff. I would rather clean up a cooking mess than eat it. And, you can eat better for less money if you just get stuff from the grocery. Most of my meals are noodles/rice/pasta/couscous and foil pack meat and boulioun made into somekind of soupy stew. Most of the cook times are less than ten minutes. Everything cooks thouroughly with no crunchy meats or veggies like some of the freeze-dried stuff. I just like it better.

“Prosecutor and the smell of his cooking has made a convert out of me. I bought a dehydrator and am working my way up to cook food on the trail. I still have a box of dehydrated or freeze-dried food to work through but I am thinking I'll try someting new for a while...

I use the lexan one that you buy at any outdoor sports shop.

I have become really lazy and eat freeze dried out of the pouch in warm weather and out of an insulated mug in the cold.”

I'll tell ya what is NOT perfect. And that is sporks. Worthless. Can't use it for a fork and ya can't use it to get everything off the bottom of the pot like a spoon. It's more like the worst of both spoon and fork rather than the best of both. Plain old lexan spoon is best.”
